How Chaplaincy Helps: Our Mission Statement

Our aim is to stand beside people at work by providing care through listening and support in times of need.

Hence our strapline ..

.. care at work

The chaplaincy delivers a highly responsive staff welfare service offering individual confidential support to member companies and their employees when and where needed - in the workplace, home or hospital visits.

This is accessible by any member of staff through email or telephone contact.

The service we offer can help to reduce absenteeism, individual or team inefficiency and help to promote wellbeing in the workplace.

The service complements the work of HR consultants and existing provisions for staff welfare by

  • offering an ‘on call’ response
  • signposting to appropriate sources of individual support
  • referring to counselling support when appropriate
  • providing support for those who choose not to access counselling
  • working with groups in the workplace e.g. at times of bereavement
  • offering mediation and advocacy services and working to reduce formal grievance procedures and tribunals
  • where appropriate contributing to mentoring, supervision, post incident support, and debriefing
  • working positively with trade unions

The service is invaluable to managers insofar as it

  • assists managers in their response to staff welfare issues such as bereavement, accident and sickness and disciplinary procedures
  • offers consultancy on staff welfare and sickness issues
  • will act on behalf of the organisation, reducing the time managers and senior staff might otherwise spend away from normal duties
  • when appropriate assists with funeral and memorial arrangements
  • offers resources in situations of redundancy

Mediation and Advocacy

Mediation can be invaluable in helping to find a way forward for individuals or groups who struggle to work together.

At best this can be damaging to the organization and those who work in it.

At worst it can lead to costly disputes, grievances and tribunals.

The chaplaincy is experienced in delivering a mediation service for individuals and groups which aims to address the issues and promote good working relationships.

Where there are grievances, disciplinary hearings or disputes the chaplaincy service can provide advocacy and representation as an independent party.

In addition the chaplaincy links extend to :-

  • the voluntary sector (from where appropriate support might be often be available at no cost to the organisation) including York CVS, Alcohol Advice Service, Future Prospects, Family Matters and the faith communities
  • interfacing with the private sector through the Chaplaincy Network, Chamber of Commerce etc
  • offering access to a network of spiritual advisers from all the major faith groups who are available to individuals and to organisations when appropriate

The service is fully available to ALL employees regardless of gender, sexuality, disability, ethnicity or indeed position within the organisation. It is available to those of any faith or none.
